Edinburgh has developed over centuries as one of Britain’s most dramatically sited cities, its architecture shaped by its volcanic ridge and long history of defence, trade, and enlightenment. The medieval Old Town rises in layered tenements and closes around the castle, while the Georgian New Town extends in precise squares and circuses, reflecting eighteenth-century ideals of urban order. These watercolours trace the city’s dual character—from fortified heights to planned elegance—capturing a place where topography and building have always been closely aligned.
