Watercolour of one of Edinburgh's most Iconic tall buildings which tells you the wrong time to give love more time!

The Balmoral Clock Tower is an iconic feature of Edinburgh’s skyline, topping the luxury Balmoral Hotel (formerly the North British Hotel) on Princes Street.

Built in 1902 by architect William Hamilton Beattie for the North British Railway Company alongside the new North Bridge, the hotel opened adjacent to Waverley Station.

The Scottish Baronial-style tower rises 190 feet (58 meters), with four 13-foot-diameter dials crafted by Hamilton & Inches; its mechanism was computerised in 2014 after faults, though the original heavy steel gear remains in place.

The clock is deliberately set three minutes fast—a tradition since 1902 to give train passengers extra time and lovers a chance to say goodbye, preventing missed departures from Waverley Station below. It shows accurate time only once yearly: during Hogmanay’s midnight countdown on December 31, when it’s adjusted for New Year’s celebrations.

Interesting fact...

J.K. Rowling finished Harry Potter in the hotel’s now-renamed suite, adding literary mystique near the tower.
