St Bernard’s Crescent is a prestigious Georgian terrace in Edinburgh’s Stockbridge neighborhood, known for its elegant architecture and leafy central gardens. Built around 1824 to designs by architect James Milne and approved by Sir Henry Raeburn, it features two-story townhouses with basements and attics, forming part of a double crescent layout.

Conceived by portrait painter Sir Henry Raeburn, the site hosted early residents including artists, authors, and figures tied to the 1843 Disruption of the Church of Scotland. It evolved from a fashionable address to a creative hub by World War I, with ongoing local pride in its ash-tree-lined garden.

Interesting facts...

Adjacent along the Water of Leith lies St Bernard’s Well, a neoclassical temple with legends of a 12th-century monk’s healing spring and an eccentric lord who slept with piglets.
