Watercolour of one of Scotland's most prestigious schools.
The Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) is Scotland’s national academy of art and architecture, based in Edinburgh and dedicated to promoting contemporary Scottish visual art and architecture.
The RSA is an independent, non‑governmental, charitable organisation “run by artists, for artists,” governed by Royal Scottish Academicians—eminent artists and architects elected by their peers. It supports art‑making, public understanding, and use of the visual arts in Scotland through exhibitions, awards, and educational activities.
Since 1911 the RSA has been based in the Royal Scottish Academy Building on The Mound in Edinburgh, adjacent to the National Gallery of Scotland. The neoclassical building was designed by William Henry Playfair and is now part of the enlarged Scottish National Gallery complex.
Interesting facts...
One of the more dramatic hidden stories is that during the 1914 Annual Exhibition, suffragette Maude Edwards attacked John Lavery’s portrait of King George V in the RSA galleries, slashing it with an axe. She was arrested, sentenced to three months in Perth Prison, but released after only 11 days.
