Newhaven Lighthouse marks the historic Newhaven Harbour in Edinburgh’s northern waterfront, a former bustling fishing village. This Category B-listed structure, built in 1878 by James Dove & Company after pier extensions, replaced an earlier 1830s stone beacon.
The tapering cast-iron octagonal tower, topped by a gallery and lantern, was first lit in 1878 and fitted with a 4th-order Chance Brothers lens. Decommissioned in the 1930s–1940s with Granton’s breakwater lighthouse taking over, it was relit in 2019 by Forth Ports using colour-changing LEDs for decorative appeal.
Interesting facts...
The original 1830s stone beacon nearby used an open coal brazier for light, requiring constant tending in harsh weather before the 1878 cast-iron tower replaced it
