York Watergate is almost 400 years old. It was built around 1626 in the grounds of York House,The river, more than 100 metres away, can barely be seen over the intervening turf. It once lapped against the gate before Bazelgette built his sewer.

Interesting facts…

It was built in 1626 as the riverside entrance to York House, the mansion of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham, serving as a grand “parking space” for his boat.

The surrounding streets (George Street, Villiers Street, Duke Street, Buckingham Street) are named after the Duke of Buckingham, reflecting his influence on the area
