A villa built around a natural mystery. Villa Pliniana occupies a wooded inlet on Lake Como's eastern shore at Torno, constructed between 1573 and 1577 by Count Giovanni Anguissola, governor of Como, around an intermittent spring that had fascinated scholars for centuries. The spring — known as the Fonte Pliniana — was first described by Pliny the Younger in the 1st century AD, who marvelled at its rhythmic ebb and flow. Leonardo da Vinci visited Torno to study the phenomenon, noting it twice in his codices. The villa's architecture literally wraps around the spring, which flows through the loggia and into the lake. Over four centuries, its salons have hosted an unmatched roster of European cultural and political figures: emperors, composers, poets, scientists, and revolutionaries drawn by the villa's singular combination of natural wonder and lake views.

The intermittent spring is a karstic phenomenon: water pressure builds and releases in cycles, causing the flow to rise and fall several times daily. Pliny the Younger wrote to his friend Licinius Sura describing it as ebbing and flowing three times a day. Leonardo da Vinci studied it before the villa existed, recording observations in both the Codex Leicester and Codex Atlanticus. Napoleon considered purchasing the villa in 1797 and is said to have played billiards on the table that still exists. Gioachino Rossini composed part of his opera Tancredi here in just three days — his piano remains in the salon. The guest list reads like a "who's who" of Western civilisation: Lord Byron, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Stendhal, Alessandro Manzoni, Franz Liszt, Vincenzo Bellini, Giacomo Puccini, Alessandro Volta, Ugo Foscolo, and Antonio Fogazzaro, who set his novel Malombra here (later filmed in the villa in 1942). Emperors Joseph II and Francis I of Austria, Queen Margherita of Savoy, and scientists Lazzaro Spallanzani and Benedetto Giovio all visited. The villa was featured in the 2024 Sereno Hotels renovation, reopening as an exclusive event venue and luxury residence after decades of private ownership.
