A former bank turned pub in the heart of legal London. This watercolour captures the grand Last Judgment at the corner of Chancery Lane and Carey Street.

Built in 1865 by F.W. Porter as the Union Bank of London, the building's grand banking hall with its fluted columns, illustrated ceiling panels, chandeliers, and mezzanine balconies  have all  been carefully preserved.

The pub was previously known as The Knights Templar, named after the medieval order that once owned land in the area. In 2023, it reopened under its current name, The Last Judgment, blending the building's historic grandeur with a modern bar and dining experience. The pub sits right in the middle of 'legal London', close to the Royal Courts of Justice and the Inns of Court hence the name.

Interesting facts...

The building appeared in the 2006 film The Da Vinci Code, standing in for a bank in Paris. Sir Edward Coke's portrait, the famous 17th-century jurist, still hangs in the dining area, a nod to the pub's legal surroundings. The original Union Bank of London's scroll is still visible above the entrance, preserving something of the building's banking past.

The Knights Templar, the medieval order that owned land here, were dissolved by the Pope in 1312 after centuries of banking and military service. The pub's name changed from 'Judgement' to 'Judgment' in 2023, dropping the first 'e' changing the spelling from English to American English. Seem odd but Judgment' is typically used in legal papers.

A traditional outdoor bar once accepted tokens from participants of a 10km charity walk raising funds for free legal advice, bargain!
