The Fondaco dei Tedeschi (which literally means “Warehouse of the Germans”) is one of Venice’s most historically flexible buildings: a medieval trading post for German merchants, rebuilt in the Renaissance after a fire, later used as customs house and post office, and most recently transformed into a luxury department store with a rooftop terrace.
Originally built as a combined hostel, warehouse, and customs point for merchants from the German-speaking lands and northern Europe, who traded metals, cloth, leather, and re‑exported spices and other goods. It dates from 1505
 
Interesting facts
The faces appear a bit plain but were originally painted by Giorgione and no other than Titian.
