The Biltmore Estate is a historic house museum and tourist attraction in Asheville, North Carolina, centred on Biltmore House—a French Renaissance (châteauesque) mansion built for George Washington Vanderbilt II between 1889 and 1895.
 
It is the largest privately owned house in the United States, with an incredible 179,000 sq ft of floor space and roughly 250 rooms, and it remains owned by Vanderbilt’s descendants while operating as a major heritage and hospitality destination (lets face it there is lots of room)
 
The name “Biltmore” combines “Bildt” (a Dutch town linked to Vanderbilt ancestry) and “more” (an old English term for rolling, mountainous countryside).
 
Interesting facts...
The building is the master of secret doors and passages. Many rooms have them and corridors run between walls and even floors. A army of staff would use these to provide complete luxury for the family and staff. There is even an outside tunnel 3 miles long to connect to the diary farm.
