Architecturally beautiful, uniquely classical and missing part of a stone ball, read on...

Clare College is one of the University of Cambridge’s historic colleges, and the university’s own undergraduate guide says it was founded in 1326, making it the second oldest college in Cambridge. It sits by the River Cam, with Old Court and gardens forming part of the Cambridge “Backs,” and it became co-educational in 1972.

It began life in 1326 as University Hall, founded by Richard de Badew, then was rescued and refounded in 1338 by Lady Elizabeth de Clare, a powerful medieval heiress and granddaughter of Edward I.

Interesting facts...

One of Clare’s best-known curiosities is the legend of the missing slice from one of Clare Bridge’s stone balls. The most popular tale says the builder was never fully paid and removed the wedge as compensation, though other explanations suggest it was simply lost during later repair work. Something which has happened before to me in my architectural career.
