Scala Contarini del Bovolo is the famous spiral staircase in Venice, attached to Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo near Campo Manin in the San Marco district. It was built for the Contarini family in the late 15th century and is known for its elegant external staircase and panoramic rooftop view.
 
The word bovolo means “snail” in Venetian, a fitting nickname for the staircase’s curling form. The palace itself began as a late-Gothic residence from the 1300s, and the spiral staircase was added in 1499 to beautify the building and it does so well.
