Portland Head Light is the most photographed lighthouse in Maine and one of the most iconic in New England and now its been watercolored!
 
Portland Head Light is Maine’s oldest lighthouse and the first in the United States built by the federal government, a stone sentinel on Cape Elizabeth that has marked the entrance to Portland Harbor since 1791. 
Commissioned by George Washington: In 1787, while Maine was still part of Massachusetts, President Washington ordered the construction of a lighthouse on Portland Head to protect the busy approaches to Portland Harbor.

As an isolated lighthouse there is no shortage of strange tales stemming from loneliness and the harsh weather.
Former residents and staff of the lighthouse museum have reported unexplained footsteps in the keeper’s dwelling , especially at night, as if someone were climbing the stairs to check the light. 
In the winter of 1898, when a keeper supposedly recorded something large emerging from the Atlantic. It startedscraping the tower, leaving huge scales and claw marks, and eventually “learning to knock in the rhythm of my footsteps.” spooky!
