A Georgian manor house among Somerset orchards. This watercolour captures Pennard House from its gardens, showing the long stone facade, sash windows, slate roof, and chimneys of a family estate that has remained in the same family for over four centuries.
The central Jacobean core was built between 1600 and 1620, while the east and west wings were added in 1815, creating the Georgian manor seen today. The house is Grade II listed and surrounded by 80 acres of apple orchards, meadows, woodland, rose gardens, and a spring-fed Victorian swimming pool. The gardens were laid out in 1835 when the Napier family enlarged the house and acquired the neighbouring property. A converted 18th-century Coach House, once home to the family horses, now serves as an event venue. The estate has remained in the Dearden family since the 17th century and is still run as a family home.
Interesting facts...
A Victorian spring-fed swimming pool, unusual for a private estate, still exists in the gardens.
Pennard House has been used as a location for Vogue, Marie Claire, and The English Home magazine. The estate is close to Glastonbury Festival and has hosted well-known celebrities over the years.
The property was featured in Dan Brown's Inferno film locations guide, linking it to a global bestseller. The Dearden family have lived here continuously since the 17th century, making it one of Somerset's longest-held family estates.
The estate produces its own cider and honey from the surrounding orchards, how picture perfect is that!
