Jones Street is a historic, brick‑paved residential street in Savannah’s Historic District, widely regarded as one of the city’s most beautiful streets and a showcase of mid‑19th‑century architecture and landscaping.
 
Named after Major John Jones, aide‑de‑camp to Brigadier General Lachlan McIntosh during the 1779 Siege of Savannah in the American Revolutionary War; he was killed in the attack on Spring Hill (now Battlefield Park).The street’s layout reflects Savannah’s grid plan, running east–west across several historic wards, with squares set a block to the north and south, which helps give it a quieter, more residential feel than the main ceremonial avenues. 
 
Most of Jones Street’s houses were built in the 1850s–1860s, with some earlier homes from the late 1840s after nearby Monterey Square was laid out in 1847. The street is especially noted for its Greek Revival and Italianate row houses and mansions.
 
Interesting facts...
A popular local explanation links the phrase “keeping up with the Joneses” to Jones Street’s status as a gold standard of Southern living, with its impeccably preserved homes symbolising affluent taste. Unlikely but sweet nonetheless.
