Once a home but now part of a college which is all about community and intimacy.

Clare Hall is a graduate college of the University of Cambridge, founded in 1966 by Clare College and focused on postgraduate study and research. It is deliberately small and international, with visiting fellows and scholars forming a big part of its community. Clare Hall also occupies part of Lord Rothschild’s former estate

Above is Elmside House is one of Clare Hall’s older character buildings, and it began life as a large private family house before being absorbed into the college.

Interesting facts...

The college was explicitly influenced by the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, which gives it a more research-institute feel than a traditional collegiate one. I also gave a presentation here around 10 years ago.
