The iconic Twin Towers of the original Wembley Stadium served as a symbol of English football for eight decades. Constructed in 1923 for the British Empire Exhibition, these 126-foot structures became the landmark entrance to the stadium, framing the approach from Wembley Park tube station.
The towers were built of ferro-concrete and designed with concrete flagpoles and crowns, originally intended as a temporary addition to the Empire Stadium. Although designed to be demolished after the exhibition, they were preserved at the request of the exhibition committee and eventually gained Grade II listed status in 1976.
Interesting facts...
The site on which the Twin Towers stood had been home to a previous, failed construction project known as “Watkin’s Folly,” an ambitious attempt to build an “English Eiffel Tower”. When the original Wembley Stadium was being demolished in 2002, workers rediscovered the original foundations of this massive, incomplete iron tower buried deep beneath the stadium floor.
