Watercolour of an unusual Turkish bathhouse just behind Liverpool Street Station.
The Turkish Bath House on Christopher Street is a rare survivor of Victorian spa culture in the City of London. Built in the late 19th century, it offered hot rooms, steam baths and cooling areas modelled on Ottoman bathhouses, catering to businessmen, clerks and visitors seeking relaxation in the financial district.
The façade is modest but distinctive, with exotic motifs hinting at the experience inside. It remains a reminder of a more leisurely, ritualised approach to urban wellbeing.
Interesting facts…
Turkish baths were once common in major British cities, but most were demolished in the 20th century. This is one of the few remaining examples in central London.
