The Torre del Mangia is a historic tower located in Piazza del Campo, the main square of Siena, Tuscany. Built between 1338 and 1348, it stands next to the Palazzo Pubblico (town hall) and is one of the most prominent symbols of the city. The tower reaches 87 meters in height (102 meters including the lightning rod), making it the third tallest historic tower in Italy.
Interesting facts…
The tower’s unique name comes from its first bell ringer, Giovanni di Balduccio, who was nicknamed “Mangiaguadagni” (“Earnings Eater” or “Profit eater”) due to his reputation for wasting money, particularly on food. The abbreviation “Mangia” became associated with the tower
