The Royal Albert Hall is a world‑famous concert hall in South Kensington, London, best known both as a major acoustic venue and as an architectural landmark of the Victorian era. It stands on the edge of South Kensington, just south of the Albert Memorial and north of Imperial College London in an area fondly called Albertopolis.
Opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, it was built as a “Central Hall of Arts and Sciences” funded partly from profits of the Great Exhibition of 1851, and later renamed in memory of her husband, Prince Albert.
The hall is an oval, domed structure in Italianate style, originally designed to hold up to about 8,000 people, with current capacity set at around 5,272 seats
Its exterior features a distinctive red‑brick ring and a large glass‑and‑wrought‑iron dome, while the circular frieze around the façade (in Minton tiles) depicts “The Triumph of Arts and Sciences.”. I believe the longest in the world.
Interesting facts...
The dome is one of the largest unsupported glass domes in the world, weighing several hundred tons and simply resting on the walls rather than being mechanically fixed to them.
