‘At a numerous Meeting of Members of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, held at the British Coffee House, Cockspur Street, on Monday 17th May 1830' it was resolved 'That a Club be formed consisting of Members of the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge to be called "The Oxford and Cambridge University Club”.’

The club was to be open to 600 members 300 from each university.

So the Oxford and Cambridge Club was born.  After 5 years or so the Committee bought land and approved the design of its clubhouse by Sir Robert Smirke. His grand design features terracotta panels expanding the ‘labours of the mind’.  One assumes this gave license to the members to relax and think at the same time.
