In and Out

The Naval and Military Club sits at 4 St James Square. Known informally as The In & Out is a humorous reference to the former clubhouse at Cambridge House. The house had rather large in and out gateposts marking its drive.

The current building dates from 1679 built as a home for the 11th Earl of Kent. It remained a home for some time with a few notable residents.

Between 1834 to 1859, the house was occupied by Earl de Grey, who was the first president of the Royal Institute of British Architects. Between 1912 to 1942 the house was owned and occupied by the second Viscount Astor. Nancy Astor, the Viscounts wife was the first woman to sit as a Member of Parliament in 1919.

The building has also been a court and government offices before becoming the clubhouse in 1996
