A drink and a show

The Golden Lion dates back to the 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1900 and is one of Londons few narrow fronted public houses.

The pub has a theatre bar upstairs, where you can see memorabilia from the former St James's Theatre, which was next door from 1835 to 1957.

The theatre hosted many famous actors and playwrights, such as Oscar Wilde, Lillie Langtry and Laurence Olivier. However it became known as the unlucky theatre, because many of its productions failed or were poorly received.  Among the last managers of the theatre were Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, who staged Shakespeare's plays for the Festival of Britain in 1951. It was demolished in 1957
