Watercolour of the impressive dome of St.Paul’s from the Roman Road of Watling Street.

This narrow City thoroughfare curves gently and was lined with 17th-19th century buildings until modern offices took over at its western end. Poet John Betjeman praised the view westward along Watling Street toward St Paul’s Cathedral, where the dome rises dramatically above surrounding structures, creating one of London’s finest vistas.

Interesting facts...

Archaeologists recently uncovered a pristine 2,000-year-old section of the original Roman road beneath southeast London’s Old Kent Road during utility work, confirming its path from Dover through the city—physical proof of layers under modern streets. The street also marked a pivotal Anglo-Saxon and Viking boundary, with Alfred the Great’s 878 treaty ceding land north and east of it to the Danes, shaping early English dialects and territories.
