St James' Church in Piccadilly is a masterpiece of Sir Christopher Wren, built between 1676 and 1684. Though often associated with Mayfair due to its proximity, it actually sits on the edge of Piccadilly. The church is renowned for its classical proportions, fine acoustics, and beautiful interior featuring carved woodwork by Grinling Gibbons. Its tall spire is a landmark visible from much of central London, and the churchyard garden provides a tranquil space in the busy city.

Interesting facts...

The church was one of Wren's favourites among his parish churches. It was built to serve the rapidly expanding West End in the late 17th century. The font was carved from a single block of Portland stone and the altar piece is a painting by Francesco Zuccarelli. Notable baptisms include those of William Hogarth, J.M.W. Turner, and Lord Byron. The church has a strong musical tradition, with concerts held regularly.
