Watercolour of one of Londons great churches.

Southwark Cathedral or The Cathedral and Collegiate Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie, Southwark, London, lies on the south bank of the River Thames close to London Bridge. It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Southwark. It has been a place of Christian worship for more than 1,000 years, but a cathedral only since the creation of the diocese of Southwark in 1905.

Interesting fact...

Southwark Cathedral hides a quirky secret in its history: it once had a beloved resident cat named Doorkins Magnificat, who roamed the grounds from 2008 to 2020 and became so popular that a stone carving of her now graces Humphrey’s Yard on the north side of the retrochoir, with a successor cat named Hodge carrying on the tradition.

Doorkins gained fame for lounging on prayer books and greeting visitors, even inspiring a book about her adventures in the cathedral. This unusual tribute reflects the cathedral’s playful side amid its Gothic architecture and Shakespeare memorials.
