Somerset House is a magnificent neoclassical building on the Strand, designed by Sir William Chambers and built between 1776 and 1796. The East Wing is part of this grand complex, originally built to house government offices and learned societies. Its long river-facing terrace offers spectacular views over the Thames, and the building's classical facade with its colonnade is one of London's architectural landmarks. The courtyard, with its famous fountains, is a popular venue for events and exhibitions.
 
Interesting facts...
The site was previously occupied by a Tudor palace built by the Duke of Somerset in 1547. The present building was designed to consolidate various government departments under one roof. It has housed the Royal Academy, Royal Society, and Society of Antiquaries. The terrace was used as a location in numerous films, including The Avengers and Sherlock Holmes. Today it houses the Courtauld Gallery and King's College London departments.
