Prior Park in Bath is an 18th-century Neo-Palladian estate featuring a grand mansion and landscape garden, both celebrated for their historical and architectural significance.

The estate was developed in the 1730s-1740s by Ralph Allen, a local entrepreneur known for Bath stone quarrying, on land overlooking the city. Originally part of a medieval deer park from around 1100, it was landscaped with input from poet Alexander Pope and Capability Brown to showcase English garden style. The site later served as a seminary and school (now Prior Park College), with the National Trust acquiring and restoring 28 acres in the 1990s.

Watercolour of the iconic Palladian Bridge—one of only four of its design worldwide—anchors the garden and exemplifies the era’s classical influences.

Interesting facts...

Mrs. Allen’s Grotto, built by poet Alexander Pope as a rocky retreat with fossils and minerals, lay overgrown until the National Trust rediscovered and protected it in 1993. A hidden ice house lurks near the lower lakes, used to store winter ice for summer cooling
