West Sussex has a rich vernacular tradition shaped by local materials: flint, brick, timber framing, clay tiles and weatherboarding. Farmhouses, cottages and barns were built to suit the landscape, with each village developing its own mixture of colours and details.
 
Interesting facts…
Flint is particularly characteristic of Sussex. It was often split to show its glossy black face and combined with red brick for decorative patterns.
