Oxford Street runs for almost two miles from Tottenham Court Road to Marble Arch, and is one of the busiest shopping streets in Europe. Its modern character is dominated by department stores, high-street chains and flagship shops, but its history goes back much further, evolving from a major Roman road into a fashionable Georgian thoroughfare.
 
In the 18th and 19th centuries Oxford Street was lined with grand townhouses and entertainments before gradually transforming into a retail destination. Today it is a key part of London's West End, especially busy before Christmas.
 
Interesting facts…
Oxford Street was once known as Tyburn Road, and was the route taken by prisoners travelling from Newgate Prison to the gallows at Tyburn, near what is now Marble Arch.
