The building was designed by Thomas Ripley and is one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in Whitehall. It was from here that Churchill directed the early years of the Second World War as First Lord of the Admiralty. Admiralty Arch was added in 1912 as a ceremonial gateway. The building contains secret tunnels that were used during the war. It now houses government offices, including part of the Cabinet Office.
