Marlborough House, St James is a historic mansion on the Mall in London. It was built in 1711 for Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, who was a close friend of Queen Anne and relative of Winston. The Duchess controlled the Queen’s finances and those who had access to her making Sara the second most powerful woman in the country. A strong character who influenced and argued with the Queen, on one occasion telling Queen Anne to ‘be quiet’, something unheard of at that time. Churchill even argued constantly with her architect Sir John Vanbrugh who accused her of “intolerable treatment”. Despite the arguments the home is rather beautiful.
The house was later occupied by several royals, including King Edward VII and Queen Mary, who added many artworks and furnishings to the house. Today, the house is the headquarters of the Commonwealth of Nations and the seat of the Commonwealth Secretariat.
