Watercolour of one of the most perfect Victorian town halls, with a very strong external appearance.
Leeds Town Hall, on The Headrow, is one of the grandest municipal buildings in the north of England. Designed by Cuthbert Brodrick and opened in 1858, it expressed Leeds's confidence and prosperity at the height of the Industrial Revolution. The façade is boldly classical, with a giant portico, Corinthian columns and a towering clock tower.
Inside are lavish public rooms, including a great hall with a huge organ, council chambers and ceremonial spaces decorated with rich plasterwork and gilding.
Interesting facts…
For many years Leeds Town Hall was the largest town hall in the country. Its great bell, “Great John”, can be heard across the city on special occasions.
