In 1888, Devonshire Street in London’s Marylebone area was notable for the pub that now bears that year’s name—though the building itself wasn’t actually constructed until 1898.
 
The pubs name actually refers to the Whitechapel murders of 1888 (the Jack the Ripper cases), not the building’s construction 
 
Interesting fact...
There’s also a Devonshire Street in Sydney’s Surry Hills suburb, for which a street map was published c.1888, but the London Marylebone connection to the “1888” name is the more famous one.
