The oldest place to buy a book
Hatchard's is the oldest bookshop in London and the UK, founded by John Hatchard in 1797. He was a publisher and an anti-slavery campaigner who opened his store at 173 Piccadilly. The shop moved to its current location at 187 Piccadilly in 1801, after the original site was demolished for the Egyptian Hall. Hatchard’s has been a landmark on one of the finest and most famous streets in the world ever since.
The bookshop has a long association with the royal family, holding three Royal Warrants from HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and HRH The Prince of Wales.
Hatchards was Oscar Wilde’s favourite bookshop. The writer signed his books sitting at the ground floor main table, today known as Oscars Table
