Hanover Square was laid out in the early 18th century as part of the development of Mayfair, intended as a smart residential square for wealthy families. Most original houses have been replaced by offices, institutions and later buildings, but a few fragments of the early streetscape still survive.
 
The square takes its name from the House of Hanover, the dynasty that provided Britain's kings from George I onwards. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was a fashionable address for aristocrats, military officers and members of parliament.

Hanover Square was once a centre for musical life in London, with the Hanover Square Rooms hosting major concerts and premieres in the 19th century.
