Ponds
Hampstead Heath features an incredible eleven man-made ponds. The main ponds were originally dug in the 17th and 18th centuries as reservoirs to meet London's growing water demand. Fed by the River Fleet, which rises in Hampstead, the ponds ceased being used for drinking water in the 19th century. Today, they serve as a mix of nature reserves and wild swimming destinations, famously open all year round—even on Christmas Day—for those brave enough to take a dip.
