Named after a grove of trees that once marked the area, Hampstead Grove is a small, winding street originally home to a windmill. Today, it features many fine detached homes set in generous gardens, reflecting the village-like character that makes Hampstead so distinctive. The street curves gently through the conservation area, with houses ranging from Victorian villas to Arts and Crafts homes, each with its own personality. Old Grove House, located opposite Fenton House, was once the residence of film director Ridley Scott.
Interesting facts...
The windmill that gave the street its name stood here until the early 19th century, when it was demolished to make way for housing. Hampstead Grove is part of the Hampstead Conservation Area, designated in 1969 to protect the area's unique character. The street has attracted artists, writers, and filmmakers over the decades, drawn by its tranquillity and proximity to Hampstead Heath. Fenton House, nearby, is a National Trust property with a notable collection of Georgian furniture and porcelain. The grove of trees that once stood here would have been a landmark for travellers approaching Hampstead from the south.
