Dukes London is a luxury hotel located at 35 and 36 St James's Place, London. It was founded in 1908 and has hosted many distinguished guests, such as composer Edward Elgar, author Ian Fleming, and members of the British royal family. Princess Diana was rumoured to have a table permanently reserved for afternoon tea. The hotel is perhaps best known for its Dukes Bar, where Ian Fleming created the iconic drink for James Bond: a vodka martini, "shaken, not stirred". As with Bridgewater House a secret tunnel is rumoured to exist. The tunnel leads to St James's Palace, according to Jack Brooksbank, Princess Eugenie's husband. The hotel also boasts a secret entrance to Green Park, which was used by spies and royalty in the past.
Interesting facts...
Dukes is said to have been a favourite haunt of the Queen Mother and Princess Diana, who allegedly dropped in for low‑key drinks rather than grand palace events. The bar is reached via a small, unmarked or “back‑door‑style” entrance from the courtyard, which reinforces the sense of a discreet, almost conspiratorial drinking den.
