Watercolour of the Rialto Bridge, Venice.

The Rialto Bridge is the oldest and most famous of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal. Completed in 1591, it was an engineering marvel of its time, with a single stone arch supporting two rows of shops.

Interesting facts…
Before the stone bridge, a floating wooden bridge stood on the same site, constantly repaired and rebuilt as traffic increased.
