The west front of Christ Church Spitalfields is one of the most dramatic and commanding facades in London. Built from bright white Portland stone, the church rises “tall, broad and white” when viewed down the full length of Brushfield Street, creating an arresting visual presence against the red-brick Queen Anne houses of the weavers.
The tower, which rises more than three times the height of the church’s body — a tall spire reaching 202 feet that sits directly behind the portico. The portico itself is what architectural critic Pevsner called “the oddest of porticoes” which I discuss in my other post.
 
Interesting fact..
A bit of an optical illusion. The sheer weight and width of the tower is striking and designed to impress the viewer. Buttresses at the side making the building appear wider than it actually is.
