Chiltern Street is one of London’s most attractive streets. Located in Marylebone the Firehouse is a local landmark with a wonderfully elaborate roofline, shown here.
Chiltern Firehouse began life as the Manchester Square Fire Station, built in 1889 in Marylebone, and it’s now one of London’s best-known hotel-and-restaurant conversions. It reopened as Chiltern Firehouse in 2014 after a major restoration that preserved much of the original Gothic frontage and added a new wing.
The building is widely described as one of the earliest purpose-built fire stations in London, and it was originally tied to the old fire services of the Metropolitan era. The site was converted into a 26-suite luxury hotel and restaurant, making it a rare example of a Victorian civic building repurposed into a high-end hospitality venue. Its architecture is often praised for its carved Portland stone arches, brickwork, and dramatic Gothic silhouette.
interesting fact.
Chiltern Firehouse became a celebrity magnet soon after opening.
