Established in 1887, Café de Flore is one of the oldest and most famous cafés in Paris. It was originally a modest café that gradually grew into a major cultural hub in the early 20th century.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Café de Flore became synonymous with the intellectual and artistic life of Paris. Writers like Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and André Gide regularly frequented the café, and it became one of the meeting points for the Existentialist movement.

Sartre and de Beauvoir, in particular, were regular patrons. They were often seen sitting in a corner, writing and discussing philosophy, politics, and literature. It's said that Sartre would occasionally leave his notebooks behind, much to the delight of his fellow patrons who could glimpse the intellectual workings of his mind.
