Buckingham Palace is the official London residence and administrative headquarters of the British monarch. Situated in the City of Westminster, it serves as a central site for state occasions and royal hospitality, while also acting as a focal point for national celebrations.
The core of the present-day palace began in 1703 as a large townhouse known as Buckingham House, built for the Duke of Buckingham. King George III acquired the property in 1761 as a private residence for Queen Charlotte, after which it was often referred to as “The Queen’s House”. In the 1820s, King George IV commissioned architect John Nash to transform the structure into a grand palace, a process that saw the addition of three wings surrounding a central courtyard. It officially became the London residence of the monarch in 1837 upon the accession of Queen Victoria.

Today, the building contains 775 rooms, including 19 State Rooms, 52 royal and guest bedrooms, 188 staff bedrooms, 92 offices, and 78 bathrooms. It even has its own post office and cash machine-luxury!
