Watercolour of Wilton's. Wilton’s Music Hall is the world’s oldest surviving Grand Music Hall, located in Graces Alley, off Cable Street in London’s East End. Built in 1859 by John Wilton, it is a Grade II* listed building and a rare example of a “giant pub hall”-a large performance space attached to an 18th-century terrace and historic pub.
A beautiful low key conservation approach has retained its features and character. including the layers of peeling paint and exposed plaster.
Interesting facts...
One rumor from its earlier, rowdier music hall days is that there was a secret cellar where drunken sailors were thrown after being robbed. The venue was once a pub for sailors from the nearby docks.
