Wadham College is a historic and architecturally distinguished constituent college of the University of Oxford, located at the junction of Broad Street and Parks Road in central Oxford. It was founded in 1610 by Dorothy Wadham, fulfilling the wishes of her late husband Nicholas Wadham of Somerset and Devon.

Wadham’s Front Quadrangle, completed between 1610 and 1613 by master mason William Arnold, is a renowned example of Jacobean Gothic design. The symmetrical façade features statues of James I and the Wadhams, a clock face designed by Sir Christopher Wren, and richly carved masonry. Inside lies one of Oxford’s grandest Great Halls, with an intricate hammer-beam roof and portraits of founders and alumni.

Interesting facts...

Although Dorothy founded the College navigating all the legal issues she never visited Oxford. managing the college until her death she was never allowed to enter. Statutes prevented women entering the college, except an elderly laundress deemed “above suspicion”.
