One of London's most memorable views; the tower of London and its bridge.
As seen from the South Bank of More London. Check out my other paintings of this beautiful area.
Tower Bridge’s Neo-Gothic towers were deliberately designed to complement the Tower of London’s medieval architecture . Queen Victoria specifically requested this style so the bridge would blend with the historic fortress.
The Tower of London was built starting in the 1070s by William the Conqueror Tower Bridge was built 1886–1894 (opened 1894) — roughly 800 years later
Tower Bridge stands immediately adjacent to the Tower of London on the north bank, just ~250 meters (less than 0.2 miles) away.
The bridge’s Gothic turrets and stone façade were chosen to avoid visually clashing with the ancient castle, making Tower Bridge look much older than its 130 years. This intentional architectural dialogue means the two landmarks form one of London’s most iconic combined views, even though Tower Bridge is a Victorian engineering feat with bascules that lift for ships.
Interesting facts...
The colour isn't what it is now. It was chocolate brown when built; painted red, white, and blue in 1977 for Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee.
