The Sorbonne is a historic and prestigious institution in Paris, originally founded in the 13th century and now a major part of France’s leading higher education system.
The Sorbonne takes its name from the Collège de Sorbon, established in 1253 by Robert de Sorbon, chaplain and confessor to King Louis IX (Saint Louis). It began as a college dedicated to theology within the University of Paris and quickly gained a reputation for intellectual excellence and a commitment to social mobility among students, setting a standard for academia in medieval Europe. Although it has changed structure over the centuries it persists.
