The Royal Exchange in London is a historic landmark situated in the heart of the City, renowned for its beautiful neoclassical architecture and trading history stretching back to 1571. Today, it is a rather upmarket destination for luxury shopping, fine dining, and cultural experiences rather than its original commercial function.

Founded in 1571 by Sir Thomas Gresham, the Royal Exchange was built as London’s first purpose-built centre for trade and commerce, inspired by continental bourses in Antwerp. Located at the intersection of Cornhill and Threadneedle Street, adjacent to the Bank of England, the Royal Exchange frequently hosts public and ceremonial events, including the traditional reading of royal proclamations.

Interesting facts....

The current building is the third on the site, after two earlier versions were destroyed by fire (the Great Fire of 1666 and another blaze in 1838).

The iconic golden grasshopper atop the Royal Exchange is actually the personal emblem of its founder, Sir Thomas Gresham. This symbol can also be found in other spots with Gresham connections across the City
