Watercolour of the entrance to MoMA. The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) was founded in 1929 by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lillie P. Bliss, and Mary Quinn Sullivan-three influential women who wanted to create a space dedicated to modern art, which was often overlooked at the time. MoMA opened just days after the Wall Street Crash, initially in rented quarters in the Heckscher Building on Fifth Avenue. Alfred H. Barr Jr., the first director, quickly expanded the collection and introduced American audiences to European modernists with groundbreaking exhibitions.

The museum moved several times before settling in its current West 53rd Street location in 1939, thanks in part to land donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr.

Interesting facts ...

MoMa staretd with just eight prints and one drawing (less than me!)

Hard to beleive but this was the first museum to show living artists. Including film and phoitography.
